A Conversation with Melissa Knight

Author of The Three Gifts ·

Meet Melissa Knight! Melissa is another talented writer featured in Hope Came at Christmas, and an author of YA romance. Her short story, The Three Gifts, brings a wonderful warmth and sweetness to this collection that readers will adore, while also pointing toward the One who loves us most—Jesus.

Melissa was kind enough to share her thoughts on Christmas, her story, and what she loves about writing for teens/young adults.

What draws you to write for young adults?

I worked with children and young adults as a public school teacher for over two decades, and I think part of my brain will always be stuck in junior high and high school. I write YA Romance in particular to hopefully plant a few seeds about what a solid, appealing relationship can look like past the usual tingly feelings and crushes. Most of all, I hope my readers at any age will understand their personal worth, and how loved they are, by their Creator.

Is there a particular Bible story, verse, or hymn that inspired your story, or is there one you’d like to share?

“We three kings of Orient are…” I was intrigued by the gifts of the Magi, and thought their meanings were worth exploring in a “how does this relate to me” kind of way. In a relationship, the three gifts are essential and timeless. I’ve been married for 37 years and my husband and I still need, and give, these gifts every day. At least we try!

The characters in these stories often face difficult decisions or circumstances. What encouragement would you offer a teen—or anyone—walking through a challenging season of life?

Talk to Jesus. Ask Him for wisdom, and the courage to follow through.

Just for fun, would you like to share one of your favorite Christmas traditions?

My dad used to read the Christmas story in Luke to our family, and whoever else gathered with us, on Christmas Eve. We’ve kept that tradition through the years, with different ones reading the account after he passed away. This year will be the very first that my daughter doesn’t spend with me, my husband, and my son; she’s a newlywed, they live hundreds of miles away and she and her husband will celebrate with us during a video call instead. However, we’ve already agreed that the reading in Luke is a must. This makes me happy!

Thank you, Melissa, for helping us get to know you better, and for sharing such a lovely story with a wonderful message this Christmas!
